I have added extra materials for your revision of Unit 6 on Energy. Use the S4 link at the top of the screen to access the revision page, Energy Matters links and close to the bottom of that page.
Standard Grade
standard grade physics is in here
S4 – combined heat & power
We started looking at the Energy Matters topic this week with a focus on energy efficiency. One of the newer ideas we discussed was combined heat and power, where energy normally wasted in an industrial setting finds an application in heating a residential area. A similar scheme called Caithness Heat and Power was installed in Wick last year.
Revision help for S4 prelim
I’ve added a page of notes to help you revise for the Standard Grade Physics Prelim in January. Click on the tab at the top of the screen to get to the page or click here instead. Remember to start early as you have a lot to cover for each subject you are studying. Leave a comment on that page if you get into difficulty and I will try to help. Use your past paper booklets for 2004 onwards to help you. I will give you more papers at Easter to help you prepare for the May exam.
S3 Colour TV
We’ve been talking about colour tv in class and I found a few items you might want to look at. First of all, the website I used in class is available here and there is further information on combining colours here.
There is also a helpful animation of the shadow mask that stops the three electron beams from reaching the wrong phosphor dots.
S3 – How do you get a picture on a TV screen?
We’ve been looking at the demonstration picture tubes in class. Now we need to find out how to get from a single bright spot on the screen to having a picture covering the whole screen. Here is a link to the website I will be using in class to help explain how a picture is produced.
Cancer treatment by Chemotherapy
We don’t need to cover chemotherapy as part of the Standard Grade Phyics course but I thought you might be interested in how it works, now that we have looked at the use of Radiotherapy. The attached pdf file contains some notes on chemotherapy taken from the CancerHelp UK website.
S4 – laser eye correction
We’ve been looking at the various uses for lasers in surgey, including the correction of eyesight. I found this site that shows how one company does this in their clinic. The animation does a pretty good job of explaining the procedure.
line spectra websites
I found a couple of websites to help you revise the emission and absorption of specific colours of light by different elements.
There is an interactive challenge to see if you can work out which elements are present in different stars.
Another test on line spectra here.
A diagram showing how absoption removes different parts of a star’s spectrum.
New Study Guide for 2007 Physics Exams
The Herald has produced a revised study guide for the 2007 exams, you can get it here.
Sunday Herald revision guide for Physics (Standard Grade & Higher)
The Sunday Herald published a revision guide for the 2006 Physics exams – those of you sitting Higher Physics next month might remember it. I found a copy of the article online and thought I would share it with those of you preparing for your first experience of SQA exams. Remember that this guide was published last year, so the date the give for the exam is incorrect – your exams will be held on 16th May. The advice is still good though!
