We started looking at the Energy Matters topic this week with a focus on energy efficiency.  One of the newer ideas we discussed was combined heat and power, where energy normally wasted in an industrial setting finds an application in heating a residential area.  A similar scheme called Caithness Heat and Power was installed in Wick last year.

S3 - Watt do you know about power? January 17, 2008

We have been looking at electrical power this week.  The man I spoke about in class today is James Watt - click on his name to get the full wikipedia article that I was unable to display in class.  Here is a short biography by the BBC.  I also spoke about how he calculated the power output of working horses and compared them to his steam machines.  You can read more about his horsepower experiments here.
I’d say he’s a pretty famous scientist - not many people get their name on every lightbulb in the country!  ;-)

Happy New Year! January 3, 2008

Happy New Year, Folks! I hope that 2008 turns out to be a most excellent year for you all. Now that the parties are over, it’s time to get down to some serious revision for your prelims. I have added the prelim dates for S4/5/6 to the calendar at the side of the page.

Those of you in S4 are in the fortunate position of having covered all of the units for the exam before the holiday. Use the S4 revision page to guide you through units 1-5 of the Standard Grade course. Let me know if you think something should be added to that page and I’ll do my best to make sure it is there before the May exam.

If you are doing Int2 or AH this year, you’ll need to come back ready to work on Monday as we have a couple more weeks of work to get through before the exam.
