solutions to higher hw due on 09/10/08 October 9, 2008

Posted by mrmackenzie in : Higher, screencast , trackback

I usually provide the solutions to hw exercises as a pdf file but I have decided to try something different now that my new SmartBoard is working.  The following YouTube videos show the solutions to Q1,2,4&5 of your most recent hw.  I’d be interested to hear your feedback on whether or not you think this is better than the usual way of providing solutions, please leave a comment to say what you think.

Hi Sinclair, how did you export the work on the smartboard to the youtube video? Did you add the commentary later?

Hi Dave, I used the SMART recorder tool from the floating tool bar. You don’t see the full screen as I chose the “select an area” pull-down option from the record button rather than record the entire screen - saves some file size. In the settings, I reduced the rate of capture to 1 frame per second to keep file size low and switched off audio recording. I did try recording audio at same time but it picked up every tap of the pen on the board and it tied me to a long usb lead between my lapel mic and the laptop. Long lead also bangs loudly against the board!

Options for getting off board and into Youtube; mac first then pc.

I use a mac, so the SMART recorder exports my data as a quicktime movie. If you have a mac, Garageband will do the hard work for you. Just drag the .mov file into the podcast track (top track on panel) of a new podcast project. Garageband prompts you if you really want to change to video or not, say yes. Then highlight the voice track in GB and record your commentary as the video plays through. Play about with audio until happy. Finally export to hard drive and the finished .mov is about 7MB for 2 minute clip and can be uploaded to Youtube.

If you are using Windows, then the SMART recorder can be set to export as either .avi or .wmv format. Don’t know about .avi but .wmv files can be imported into Windows Movie Maker and this has the option of adding audio commentary to your movie (there is a microphone icon at bottom of the timeline panel). Save the narrated movie and upload the wmv file to Youtube.

Hope this makes sense. Give me a shout if I’ve missed something out.

You could also do this without a IWB using something like a tablet pc or OneNote. You could always do it all at once in Jing (www.jingproject.com) - probably simpler but you have to do it all in one go and file format is less flexible (.swf)
